Digital Single Vehicle Document (DUA) to Launch in the Coming Weeks

The Single Vehicle Document (DUA) will be available in a digital format in the coming weeks, Gonçalo Matias, Minister Adjunct and for State Reform, told Parliament.

“The digital DUA is already sorted and will be launched in the coming weeks. It was already ready; it was simply a matter of funding, which is now resolved,” the minister said.

When will the digital DUA be available?

According to the government, the rollout is expected within the next few weeks now that the funding issue has been settled.

Digital DUA: what it means for vehicle owners

With the new format, owners will be able to check their vehicle details directly without needing to rely on the physical document, in line with the Government’s wider plan to cut red tape and make access to official paperwork simpler.

The change is also intended to reduce fines caused by discrepancies between the address recorded on the DUA and the address on the Citizen Card-an update that is mandatory and can lead to penalties if not completed.

What is the DUA?

The Single Vehicle Document (DUA) works like a car’s “citizen card”. It is the official document that identifies the vehicle and authorises it to be used on the road, bringing key information together in a single record:

  • Vehicle identification: make, model, registration plate, chassis number and colour;
  • Owner details: name and address;
  • Technical specifications: engine capacity, gross weight, fuel type and tyre sizes;
  • Charges/encumbrances: information on retention of title.

The DUA is required in a range of situations, including roadside checks, compulsory periodic inspections, and purchase-and-sale procedures.

Older vehicles may still have the document in paper form-the traditional blue logbook and ownership registration.
