Why Mazda has withdrawn the fully electric MX-30
Mazda has brought the European run of the fully electric MX-30 to an end. Monique Clark, the brand’s UK PR representative, confirmed this to Motor1: “The electric version of the MX-30 has been withdrawn from the European market, and all units available in the UK have already been sold. Production of the electric Mazda MX-30 for Europe and for the UK has been discontinued.”
Even so, the MX-30 line is not disappearing altogether. The MX-30 R-EV - which uses a Wankel engine as a range extender - will remain on sale.
The Mazda MX-30 R-EV that stays
With a range of just 200 km combined with a high price tag, the fully electric Mazda MX-30 was always held back by one major drawback in the marketplace.
The arrival of the MX-30 R-EV in 2023 addressed that limitation, albeit in a different way. The 35,5 kWh battery from the 100% electric version was cut in half - to 17,8 kWh - and the electric-only driving range fell to 85 km.
However, under the bonnet Mazda added an 830 cm³ Wankel rotary engine (55 kW/75 cv and 116 Nm) whose sole job is to generate electricity - it is not connected to the wheels. The result is a maximum combined range of 680 km (the fuel tank is generous, with 50 litres).
The MX-30 R-EV also received a power increase - 125 kW (170 cv) instead of 107 kW (145 cv) - but it lost 11 Nm of torque, settling at 260 Nm. In Portugal, it is available from 40 927 euros.
What’s next for Mazda’s electrification?
Ending the 100% electric MX-30 does not mean Mazda is stepping back from its electrification plans. Two new fully electric models from the Japanese brand are on the way. The first is the Mazda 6e saloon, which has already entered its pre-sale period, with promotional pricing starting at 40 050 euros and deliveries expected in September.
Mazda 6e and Mazda CX-6e: the next electric models
The second newcomer is the Mazda CX-6e, unveiled last month at the Shanghai Motor Show. From a technical standpoint it matches the 6e, but it adopts an SUV body style.
As with the MX-30, alongside the fully electric version it will also be offered with a range-extender variant - although this time it is not a Wankel engine. Find out more about the CX-6e in detail:
The CX-6e will launch in China later this year, and it has not yet been confirmed when it will reach the European market.
