After updating the 4 Series Coupé and Cabrio, along with the “all-powerful” M4, BMW has now refreshed the two remaining models in the line-up: the 4 Series Gran Coupé and the i4 Gran Coupé, the latter being fully electric.
The changes are far from major, but they are noticeable straight away on the outside, which has received a few styling tweaks, starting with the double-kidney front grille, which remains partially closed off on the BMW i4.
The lighting signature has also been revised, with the 4 Series Gran Coupé and i4 Gran Coupé now featuring vertical LEDs that serve as the daytime running lights. The rear lights have also been redesigned and can be fitted with Laser LED technology, just like on the M4 CSL.
Interior has also moved on
The updates are also evident inside, where both models feature the Curved Display already seen on other models from the German brand. It combines a 12.3” digital instrument cluster and a 14.9” multimedia screen beneath a single curved glass surface.
In addition, both models now come with the latest-generation operating system (BMW 8.5), which promises new graphics and quicker access to the most frequently used functions.
But there is more. There are new steering wheels, which in M Sport versions have a flat-bottom design, while the air vents have been reshaped, now appearing smaller and more minimalist in style. The seats, meanwhile, retain their sporty design while gaining new materials.
A new electric version
As for the powertrains, the BMW i4 now comes in four variants, starting with the entry-level i4 eDrive35, which delivers 210 kW (285 hp) and a range of up to 500 km (WLTP), and topping out with the most powerful version, the BMW i4 M50 xDrive, which produces 400 kW (543 hp) and claims a range of up to 522 km (WLTP).
Alongside these, there is also the i4 eDrive40, with 250 kW (340 hp) and a range of up to 600 km (WLTP), as well as the new i4 xDrive40, with four-wheel drive, producing 295 kW (401 hp) and offering up to 548 km (WLTP), thanks to an 81.1 kWh battery.
No manual gearbox
In the 4 Series Gran Coupé, the engine range remains unchanged, with the only real news being that all versions now come as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, meaning the manual gearbox has been dropped.
That means the engine line-up still consists of three petrol versions (420i, 430i xDrive and M440i xDrive, with 184, 245 and 374 hp respectively) and two diesel variants (420d and 430d xDrive, with 190 and 286 hp respectively).
The two diesel units and the most powerful petrol version, the 430d xDrive, fitted with a six-cylinder engine, are paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. However, contrary to what many had expected, BMW did not use this update to extend the same solution to the lower-powered petrol versions.
When will they arrive?
The updated BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and i4 Gran Coupé will enter production in July, although for now the Munich-based brand has yet to announce pricing for Portugal or a market launch date.
